 online ,social and participatory media

How has online news affected print news ?

online news has been affected from the easy accsesablity  and fast upkeep with current events - this particuary atracts the digital generation who want a faster speed of news therefor atracting

reduntant ( loosing job as they are not nessesary for the same news media)

convergence ( multiple media on one device -eg my computer)

inderpendant has gone from print to only online due to less physical copys brought  making it too expensive to product

  • use of sensational exaggerated ( often in the headline)  calims - making  people jump to the story - due to intriuge
  • people would much rater see things about food and sport and lifestyle -due to our short attention spans and instant engadegment
  • Observer online follows the structure of its print edition, but there is far more prominence on

lifestyle, food and sport stories. These areas don’t tend to dominate the front cover of a print edition.
There are also more images/use of photography on the homepage.

Scott Trust values - These make The Observer/Guardian different from other newspapers

Regardless of The Observer being print and online, they are still owned by the
Scott Trust, (and in turn the Guardian Group) which:

  • Believes in the rights of everyone (human rights)
  • Believes all individuals of the world are of equal worth (democracy)
  • Appoints the editor of the Observer
  • Upholds its remit for its newspapers to uphold liberal values and the freedom of the press
  • Was set up not to interfere with the commercial independence of the newspaper, unlike other newspapers where advertisers may have influence
  • Was set up to prevent The Observer being affiliated to a political party, whereas some other newspapers traditionally support one political party.
  • Articles should criticise: Extreme right-wing ideas and Extreme left-wing ideas

Representations should:

  • Promote democracy (equality) and human rights
  • Celebrate individuality, diversity, tolerance and allowing opposing points of view – be open-minded about change!
  • Care for people no matter what in the world they live in (internationalism)
